Summary

Classification and code of dangerous goods (GB 6944-2012) stipulates the classification, precedence of hazards and Code (UN number) of dangerous goods, which is applicable to transport, storage, operation, distribution and related activities relating to dangerous goods.

It is known that GB 6944-2005 was formulated in accordance with UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN RTDG)-Model Regulations Part 2: Classification (the thirteenth revised edition), which is amended on a two-yearly cycle. With a view to keeping consistent with it, GB 6944-2012 comes into force to be in correspondence with its sixteenth revised edition.

However, at present, the latest version of UN RTDG-Model Regulations is its seventeenth revised edition, so the national standard still lags behind the international rules

Compared with its previous version GB 6944-2005, the following changes are made:

  • To amend some terms, definitions and describe more specific criteria for determination of the class and division of some dangerous goods;

  • To add the classification and combination of the compatible groups of the explosives;

  • To add the precedence of the hazards of dangerous goods;

  • To add packing groups of dangerous goods.

The content in Chapter 4, 5, 6 of this standard are mandatory, the rest of which is recommendatory.

The standard is proposed by the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee 251 on Dangerous Chemicals Management of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 251).

The drafting units are China Waterborne Transport Research Institute and Shanghai Research Institute of Chemical Industry
