270 Notified Chemical Substances Added to Japan ISHL

Recently, Japan Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) added 270 notified chemical substances to the Industrial Safety and Health Law (ISHL). The total amount of chemicals managed by the ISHL is 62,907 now.

In Japan, before manufacture or import of new chemicals, they must be notified under both the ISHL and Chemical Substances Control Law (CSCL). It will take 1 year for a new chemical to be included in the ISHL since the date of notification but 5 years in the CSCL.

Besides new chemicals, the following categories of chemicals are also regulated by Japan ISHL:

  • Harmful substances to be prohibited;

  • Harmful substances that require permission from MHLW;

  • Harmful substances that require labels;

  • Harmful substances that require SDSs
