Australia NICNAS: Two Substances Previously Listed in AICS Reclassified as New Substances

Two substances have been removed from the Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS) by the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS). They are now regarded as new substances and need to be notified and assessed before being manufactured in or imported into Australia.

The two substances are:

  • 2-butenedioic acid (2Z)-, 1,4-dibutyl ester, polymer with ethenyl acetate and rel-(1R,2R,4R) – 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2-yl 2 propenoate (CAS number: 136392-68-2)

  • Poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl),.alpha.-(1oxo-2-propen-1-yl),omega.-(nonylphenoxy) (CAS number: 50974-47-5)

The Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS) is the official list of industrial chemicals in use in Australia between Jan 1st 1977 and Feb 28th 1990. It distinguishes new chemicals from existing chemicals. Chemicals not included in AICS (if not exempted from notification) are regarded as new chemicals and need to be notified and assessed by NICNAS. The approximately 40,000 chemicals listed in the AICS can be imported or manufactured in Australia without being notified as new chemicals.
