China Reviews 1st Round of Central Environmental Protection Supervision

By 30th April, according to MEE, 7 Chinese provinces (cities) have finished 357 out of 493 rectification tasks written in the rectification plan. The rest are still in progress.  

The 7 provinces (cities) includes Beijing, Shanghai, Hubei province, Guangdong province, Chongqing, Shanxi Province and Gansu province. Individual plans include:

  • Shanghai focuses on the management of water and waste pollution.

  • Hubei province is emphasizing lake recovery by dismantling 815 km2 purse seine and cage culture, and 30km2 pearl culture.

  • Guangdong province is focusing on developing environmental infrastructure, with sewage treatment capacity increased by 1.29 million tons/day.

  • Gansu province has invested 2.3 billion Yuan on the rectification of Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve. It canceled 143 out of 144 mining rights and closed down 7 hydropower stations (still under construction).

In the last two years, the 1st round of Central Environmental Protection Supervision saw investigations conducted in 31 provinces/cities/regions and successfully solved more than 80,000 environmental problems. The first-round inspection received more than 135,000 complaints from the public, handled 29,000 cases and issued fines totaling 1.43 billion Yuan. 18,448 officials were investigated and 18199 were found responsible for some cases.

After China’s review on its first-round supervision, it will expect the second-round in 2019. State-owned enterprises will be further included as well.
