Shanghai Seized 1.55m Tons of Illegal Hazard Chemicals

According to the Shanghai inspection and quarantine bureau, 1.55 million tons of illegal hazard chemicals were seized since  China strengthening inspection on imported hazardous chemicals from 1 February 2012. By April 20th, 462 batches of 4062 inspected chemicals were found illegal by Shanghai entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau. The illegal chemicals valued at $ 45.147 million accounted for 11.4% of the examined chemicals. Most of the flaws came from unlabelled precautionary labels or labeled inconformity with the new requirements from CIQ, which was published early this year.

According to statistics, more than 40 thousands of batches of chemical products were imported or exported through Shanghai last year, which involved a wide variety of categories and industries. The unlabeled or non-standard labeled chemicals, especially unlabeled in Chinese, will result in safety risks in storage, transportation or downstream uses.

Shanghai inspection and quarantine agency has conducted a briefing on yesterday and reiterated China's new requirements of GHS labeling and SDS for entry-exit hazardous chemicals. CIQ reminded related companies to provide qualified hazard identification and classification report, SDS and precautionary label provided when applying for a Customs Clearance inspection. Meanwhile the companies are suggested updating their knowledge of China's regulations on hazard chemicals, the UN issued Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations (TDG), Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of chemicals in China and other rules at home and abroad.
