South Korea Updates Existing Chemicals Inventory

South Korea’s Ministry of Environment (MoE) updated the Korea’s existing chemical inventory (KECI) on 3 June by MoE Notice No. 75-2015. Adding 951 chemical substances (KE No. 2015-3-6167 ~ 2015-3-7117), the total number of substances listed on the KECI is now 44,290.

Compared to the previous draft issued on 12 May for public consultation (ChemLinked news), one more substance was appended to the list indicated with the accession number KE No. 2015-3-7117.

The substances newly added into the KECI have been notified as new substances pursuant to the former Toxic Chemicals Control Act (TCCA). After changing their regulatory status from new to existing, the manufacturers and importers are exempt from new chemical registration under K-REACH. However, most of these substances are subject to confidential protection, meaning the substance names are only given generic identities without CAS No., therefore enterprises are recommended to formally request information from the KCMA to confirm whether their substances are listed in KECI .
