Taiwan to Update Testing Methods for Toxic Substances

Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) is now seeking public comments on two draft testing methods for polybrominated diphenyl ethers and organic compounds, respectively published on 9 Aug and 12 Aug 2013. Any comments are welcome to submit to the Environmental Analysis Laboratory of EPA within the 14-day consultation period starting from the announcement date.

The draft testing method for polybrominated diphenyl ethers – gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method (NIEA T506.31B), if approved, will replace the current version (NIEA T506.3oB) which has been effective since 15 Dec 2008. The proposed draft will expand the applicable scope to polybrominated diphenyl ethers contained in toxic chemicals or wastes from toxic or hazardous businesses in liquid and solid forms, including

  • Decabromobiphenyl ether;

  • Octabromobiphenyl ether;

  • Heptabromodiphenyl ether;

  • Hexabromodiphenyl ether;

  • Pentabromobiphenyl ether;

  • Tetrabromodiphenyl ether,etc.

The current testing method for organic compounds in toxic chemical substances – gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method (NIEA T706.22B), being effective on 15 Mar 2011 will be abolished when the updated version (NIEA T706.23B) comes into force. An updated list of organic compounds applicable to this method is attached to the draft proposal.
