Updates on Explosion at Gas Factory in Central China’s Henan Province

On July 19, an explosion rocked a coal-to-gas plant in Yima, Sanmenxia in Central China’s Henan Province. According to the latest report, fifteen people were killed, five people are missing, and 19 others were severely injured. The local fire department has dispatched 46 fire engines and 209 firefighters to extinguish the fire and search for survivors. And according to the notice issued by the MEM, a further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. 

Introduction to the Coal-to-Gas Plant in Yima 

The coal-to-gas plant in Yima is affiliated to Henan Province Gas (Group) Co., Ltd., and was established in 1997, and has been listed in the enterprise inventory for key monitoring by MEE. According to a news reported by CCIN in May, 2019, the coal-to-gas plant treats three kinds of waste (waste gas; waste water; industrial residue), and was deemed compliant with all national environmental protection requirements. On July 9, 2019, the coal-to gas plant in Yima was even accredited by authorities for its safety and accident prevention systems.
