In China, seven CRC-MEP drafted national standards on ecotoxicological testing have entered into force since August 1st. The seven GB/T (nationwide recommended) standards respectively specify the testing methods of ready biodegradability, degradation screening, biodegradation screening, soil Koc estimation using HPLC, aerobic and anaerobic transformation in soil and aquatic sediment systems, and fish acute toxicity.
Among these, the fish acute toxicity test and the ready biodegradability test are both mandatory testing items necessary to the ecotox data report under China’s new substance regular notification. And the soil & sludge adsorption coefficient estimation is usually considered a prior determinant for whether the two ecotox tests( the earthworm acute tox test or the seed germination & root elongation tox test) can be exempted from the regular notification.

Also going into effect on the same date are four GB/T standards co-drafted by several chemical institutes including the CRC-MEP, which concerns ecotoxicological tests of soil microorganisms, terrestrial plants and digested sludge.
All the eleven GB/T standards were released for the first time by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) at the end of last year. They have been the second release since China enacted and implemented relevant ecotoxicological testing methods in 2009. This group of standards is expected to forcefully promote China’s chemical hazard identification and risk assessment.
