South Korea Updates Toxic Substance List and GHS Classification List

Korea National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) announced two toxic substances newly added into South Korea’s Toxic Chemical Substance List (TCSL), according to the NIER Notice No.2013-33 on 30 Dec 2013. For the added substances, appropriate actions should be taken to comply with the management requirements under TCCA one month after the notice’s publication, such as reporting on import and manufacture, obtaining business permission, etc.

The two toxic substances have been simultaneously included into the GHS Classification List, which is a mandatory requirement since 1 July 2011. It provides Korea-specific TCSL identification numbers (TCSL ID), CAS No., classification information, pictograms, signal words, hazard statements and M factors. The changes to the list were effective immediately after issuance of the notice.

The substances added to the TSCL and the GHS Classification List are:

  • [Triphenylmethylium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate(1-)] (CAS: 136040-19-2)

  • [3-Bromo-2- methyl-1-propene] (CAS: 1458-98-6)

On 10 Oct and 5 Aug 2013, the NIER added 4 and 2 toxic substances respectively to the TCSL and GHS Classification List. By 2013, totally 810 toxic substances have been included in these two separate lists of chemicals under the Toxic Chemicals Control Act (TCCA). The full lists are attached below for reference, and the information contained is accessible on the Korea’s National Chemicals Information System.
